Aranui downs Rangiora

Big Softie Aranui demolished Continental Caterers Rangiora with a strong second half challenge in a women's division one basketball championship section match at Cowles Stadium on Tuesday evening. The adventurous Rangiora girls bustled Aranui, the Patron's Trophy winner, into errors in the first half to lead, 18-17, at half-time. but Aranui’s precision team-work and tight defence forced Rangiora to shoot poorly in the second half. Aranui pulled away steadily to win, 65-38, with 19-point efforts from Tina Beukenholdt and Margaret Costain. Admiral Lodge Checkers

looked set to overwhelm Rebels, of Mid-Canterbury, with precision basketball in the first half. It led, 46-25. at half-time but lacked concentration and discipline in the second spell. Rebels fought back strongly with fast bustling play but Checkers hung on to win, 65-56. Barbara Carr (24) and Dianne Woodhouse (18) had good games for Checkers, while Raelene Forde (17), Lynette McGrath (14) and Sue Francis (11) stood out for Rebels. Charisma Mairehau contained the ever improving Burnham side to win 58:32 in the late game after leading 24:19 at half time.
