Nuclear-free areas
Sir,—You note how slowly, and with what dangerous consequences, the United States and the Soviet Union are moving to “find some way to reduce their nuclear arsenals” (July 22). Very true, which makes it astonishing that the National Party to date, including John Bateman with his pre-nuclear “thinking approach,” want us on the nuclear hit-list in the meantime. Before writing any more proA.N.Z.U.S. editorials, when you know the treaty can make us a target, you need to ponder this situation with much more care. The formation of a “Nuclear-Free Nationals” group is the most hopeful sign, apart from the Government’s anti-nuclear stand, in a long time.—Yours etc., J. GALLAGHER. July 22, 1985.
