Pornography
Sir,—Maurice Simes’ proposal that Patricia Bartlett be honoured (“The Press,” July 16) needs challenging. While I agree that rape and assaults on women are a serious social problem, I disagree strongly with the correspondent’s notions on how to make society safer. I would like to see much more acceptance of warm and loving behaviour in society. I would be quite happy if this could include people being nice to each other sexually, on our screens, in print, and in public places if they wish, without Miss Bartlett niggling away on their consciences. The true obscenity in our society is violence, and while violent acts are perceived as the ultimate in entertainment, suppressing sexuality and promoting guilt is not going to do much good to anyone. Rape has very little to do with sex and a lot to do with the urge to feel physical power by violent action.—Yours, etc, TIM LINDLEY. July 17, 1985.
