Big power-price rise feared

PA Auckland The Treasury is considering a 50 per cent rise in the price of electricity supplied to power boards, says the Waitemata board’s chairman, Mr Innes Kerr-Taylor. The Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association, of which he is also chairman, estimated the 50 per cent

rise from Treasury tax requirements on Government revenue, a dividend payment to the Government, payment of an estimated 12 per cent goods and services tax for electricity supply, and inflation at 16 per cent. The tariff normally is set to take effect on April 1. Mr Kerr-Taylor said he did not expect the whole 50 per

cent rise to be enforced at once. The association’s general manager, Mr Terry Hore, said from Wellington that the bulk tariff would rise 12 per cent if tax were charged at 45c in the dollar on the ?284 million surplus New Zealand Electricity wanted to achieve this year.
