Disruption not expected

Employers are not expecting a disruptive wage round, according to a Canterbury Employers’ Association spokesman, Mr Colin Mclnnes. He was responding to a comment made on Tuesday by the president of the Federation of Labour, Mr Jim Knox, that unions would have to “battle it out” after the Government’s rejection of an interim wage increase. “We are not expecting any disruption and certainly hope there will be none,” Mr Mclnnes said. The lack of a reformed bargaining structure meant, however, that talks would already be under pressure and any union threats of disruption could worsen the situation, he said. It was not worth speculating on the likely over-all percentage wage rise which would be determined after the wage round later this year, he said.
