S.I. flight for 20
By
LES BLOXHAM,
travel editor What, exactly, do the letters QANTAS stand for? Hundreds of readers who entered “The Press”-Qantas scenic flight competition plumped for Queensland and Northern Territories Air Services. They were wrong. Qantas’s Christchurch office was convinced it was Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service — and- the staff even produced an old picture to back up their claim. Alas, they were also wrong. Qantas’s official diary for 1985 opted for Queensland and Northern Territories Aerial Services. So did Ralph de Sola’s Abbreviations Dictionary: but they were wrong too. By this stage, the judges of the competition were so confused, they had to call Qantas’s head office in Sydney last evening to find the correct answer. “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services,” confirmed the airline’si public relations mana-
ger, Mr Ken Boyes. On the basis of that official ruling, 20 lucky contest winners will take a free scenic flight on Qantas’s new Boeing 767 ER (extended range) twin-jet over the South Island on Saturday. The contest attracted more than 2000 entries, but most of the entrants were tripped by the fifth letter, submitting “air” instead of “aerial.” Answers to the other questions — who makes the 767 (Boeing); what does ER stand for (extended range); and is Qantas’s official signia a kangaroo or a koala bear (kangaroo) caused no difficulties. The first of Qantas’s six 8767 s paid a brief visit to Wellington yesterday on a training flight. The second aircraft is expected to arrive at Christchurch about midday on Saturday. All winners in the contest will receive letters of confirmation with details of their reporting times tomorrow.
