Man guilty on 29 charges
A jury in the District Court last evening found Michael Johnston, aged 38, guilty on 29 charges of false pretence and obtaining credit by fraud arising from his selling advertising for a magazine that was never published. Judge Sheehan remanded him on bail to August 13 for sentence. The jury returned with its verdict after a retirement of two hours. The trial lasted two days. The 25 false pretence charges related to the defendant’s obtaining money from shops and businesses in Christchurch and outlying centres, and on the West Coast, as payment for advertising in a Canterbury sports or racing publication. The four fraud charges involved the defendant’s incurring debts for accommodation at hotels or taverns at Maruia Springs, Kumara, and Westport, and obtaining credit with a Christchurch photographer arising from his photographing premises of prospective advertisers.
