Inquiry moves to N.Z.
By G. K. YULE A large-scale inquiry into the ownership of a number of standardbred horses racing in Australia has this week spread to New Zealand. The chief steward of the Harness Racing Board of Victoria, Mr Gerard Lalor, accompanied by a member of the Victoria Police Racing Squad, will be in New Zealand for about a week interviewing persons who have sold horses to Victoria over several months. The inquiries yesterday centred on Christchurch and will spread to other parts of the South Island in the next few days. Extensive inquiries, involving a large number of
horses, including many bought from New Zealand, have been under way in Victoria for more than two months. An inquiry was opened about June 20, during which the prominent trainerdrivers, Brian Gath and Tony Peacock, and a registered owner, Mr J. Cunningham, were questioned. The inquiry was opened after advice from the Racing Squad and a complaint by Mr Cunningham. It was adjourned pending the completion of inquiries by the Racing Squad. The stewards advised that when police inquiries are completed, several adjourned stewards’ inquiries will proceed.
