Imported fuel will cost $55M extra
PA Hamilton A shutdown of the Marsden Point oil refinery for five months will cost New Zealand about $55 million extra in imported 1 refined fuel products, according to the Ministry of Energy’s liquid fuels directorate. More than a million tonnes of mainly petrol and diesel will be imported, at a daily cost of $400,000. About 300,000 tonnes of
the petrol and a small amount of diesel will be processed at overseas refineries from exported Taranaki gas condensate (a form of light crude). Crude oil from Taranaki will also be exported during the shutdown. Marsden’s old refinery, closed on July 1, will be almost completely demolished and rebuilt during the 19-week revamp.
