Court action against Sydney radio station
NZPA-AAP Sydney A contempt of court action would be taken against a Sydney radio station for broadcasting interviews with the foreman of the jury which found the High Court judge, Lionel Murphy, guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice, said the Federal Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr lan Temby, Q.C. In a telex to station 2GB’s general manager, Mr Nigel Milan, Mr Temby said it was proposed to institute proceedings in the New South Wales Court of Appeal. In other developments,
legal sources said Murphy’s counsel would argue against his being sentenced when he returns to the Central Criminal Court on July 18, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Bill Hayden, said a call for no further comment on the case was sensible. The talk-back host, John Laws, broadcast an interview with the foreman on Thursday and later in the day Mr Temby telexed main news media, appealing to them not to report or comment on it. The foreman telephoned in again on Friday morning and the station broadcast more of his comments.
