Mrs Hercus in chair
NZPA Nairobi A meeting of more than 50 Commonwealth Ministers responsible for women’s affairs has been chaired in Nairobi by New Zealand’s Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Hercus. Mrs Hercus was asked to chair a session of the meeting, planned to coincide with the United Nations World Conference for Women opening in Nairobi today. “If such a meeting had been held a few years ago, there would have been only a handful of Ministers attending,” Mrs Hercus said.
“The fact that almost every Commonwealth country was represented at this meeting by a Minister with specific responsibility for women’s affairs is a tremendous sign of progress.” Mrs Hercus noted that only two of the countries attending — New Zealand and the island group of St Christopher-Nevis in the Caribbean — had completely autonomous women’s affairs Ministries. Some had advisory committees, others had units within larger host .departments. Commission-type structures also were common.
