Flotilla preparations

PA Auckland A peace flotilla is expected to sail for Mururoa Atoll in a few weeks in spite of the sinking of the mother ship Rainbow Warrior. The flotilla’s co-ordinator, Mr Rein Achterberg, said yesterday that about $15,000 would be needed for the venture. The Greenpeace ketch Vega and the Auckland yachts Alliance and Varangian would lead the flotilla. The Alliance is due to leave on July 22 and the Vega and Varangian on August 6, Hiroshima Day.

“Our main concern at this point is that all vessels are suitably equipped to make a safe journey to the test zone and back, 1 said Mr Achterberg. The flotilla boats had expected to get radios from the Rainbow Warrior, but now needed VHF and SSB radios as well as radio operators for the voyage. The flotilla would leave only slightly behind schedule. The boats would remain off Mururoa for as long as possible to focus world attention on nuclear testing, Mr Achterberg said.
