Support for Baha’is in Iran
Wellington reporter Details of what the Government is doing to support the Baha’i community in Iran against persecution have been given by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange.
He said the Government had supported the appointment of a United Nations special representative to investigate human rights violations in. Iran, including mistreatment of Baha’is there.
At last year’s session of the United Nations General Assembly New Zealand had co-sponsored a resolution which called on all States to
adopt legislation to prohibit discrimination on the ground of religion. Mr Lange said the Government would continue through the United States to seek to reduce discrimination against religious minorities in Iran and elsewhere in the world. The Government had not made representations direct to the Iranian authorities, he said. There was no evidence that such approaches, as had been made by others in the past, had served the interests of the Iranian Baha’i community.
