Inter-island ferry service
Nine companies have told the Government they are interested in providing a ferry service from Bluff to Stewart Island. This was in response to approaches the Government had made to 17 companies, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, in reply to a series of questions in Parliament. He said the details of the proposals by the nine companies would be with the Government by the end of the month.
This followed up the decision by the Government that the present ferry service provided by the Wairua would not be continued beyond September 9, after the school holidays.
Mr Prebble said there was already a private enterprise service running to Stewart Island while the Wairua was still in service and there were strong indications that it would continue after September 9. Any operator might start a service at any time, and one already had.
