Stallion services sell for $316,650
PA Hamilton An auction of stallion services at Matamata on Saturday raised $316,650, with the top price of $52,500 being paid for the service nomination to the Cambridge Stud’s Danzatore. Proceeds from the auction, recognised as the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, will be used to boost the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes and other selected races at Matamata Racing Club and Cambridge Jockey Club meetings. day’s auction was a record by $97,300. In 1983, $219,350 was outlaid for 43 service nominations with a top price of $lOO,OOO for the Sir Tristram service. Last year, 53 lots raised $175,900, the top price of $40,000 going for the nomination to Grosvenor. At Saturday’s auction, nominations to 52 stallions were sold. Other notable prices were $42,500 for the Star Way service, $37,000 for Grosvenor, and $17,000 for Wolverton. A late-entry service nomination to Magellan fetched
$4lOO. Magellan, a three-year-old by Habitat from the former outstanding New Zealand mare, La Mer, was purchased late last week from England by lan Steffert, of Morrinsville, and will stand the new season at his Park Lane stud. Magellan is the second foal of his dam and had only one start before injury brought an end to his racing career. Mr Steffert expects the horse in New Zealand in plenty of time for the spring breeding season to stand alongside Billenium at Park Lane. J
