Mr Trick prevails in Fourex Cup
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney New Zealander, Mr Trick, added yet another big race from the Brisbane winter carnival to the tally of the New Zealand breeding industry when he snatched the sAust2os,ooo Fourex Cup in Brisbane on Saturday. The race shared equal billing with the $205,000 Elders Handicap, won by the New Zealand filly Canterbury Belle, and the Castlemaine Stakes, won by Tristram’s Edition, as the richest race in the carnival, but all the major events except the Rothmans 100,000 and the Channel 7 Classic
have gone to New Zealanders or New Zealand-breds. The Rothmans went to the Sydney-based Lord Ballina and Prince Frolic won the channel 7, but apart from that, Tristram Rose won the $50,000 Queensland Oaks, Tristina the $lOO,OOO Derby, Foxseal the $155,000 Brisbane Cup, Our Sophia the $75,000 Grand Prix, and Hayley’s Hope the $105,000 Prime Minister’s Cup. With only the $60,000 Ipswich Cup and the $25,000 Fourex Mile to come in the next fortnight, New Zealanders have once again asserted their superiority at the Brisbane meeting. But for sheer thrilling finishes, Mr Trick’s Fourex Cup win would rank up with the best after the four-year-old turned on a sustained run from 800 m out, weaving through the field, to score by just a long head from the veteran Astrolin with New Zealander Coober’s Gold a nose away, third. The jockey, Maree Lyndon, was the toast of the racing world this week-end, becoming the second woman in four, years to win the cup, following Debbie Moseley on Double You Em in 1982.
After winning the race, Mr Trick survived a protest from the jockey of the runner-up who claimed Lyndon had allowed Mr Trick to crowd out in the dash to the line. But according to Brisbane journalists, the New Zealand trainer, Errol Skelton, had been refused permission
by the stewards to also protest against Mr Trick after his charge Rose and Thistle had received a couple of blows across the face from Lyndon’s whip as he went for a run on the inside and finished fifth. Stewards refused Skelton permission to protest under the rules of racing which bar protests from any runner finishing worse than fourth. Skelton is understood to be aiming Rose And Thistle for the Ipswich Cup in a bid for a consolation win. Meanwhile Mr Trick is heading home to New Zealand to be prepared for the Auckland Cup at the New Year, while another runner heading straight home is Atrapar which found the jump from the 1350 m of the Rothmans 100,000 last week to the 2200 m of the Fourex Cup just a bit beyond him in a week.
