Retail sales growth slowing

The value of retail sales in May was up 19.3 per cent over May last year to a total value of ?1988.1M the Government Statistician announced. The level of increase in sales values was less than April figures which showed a 22.5 per cent jump over April 1984. The April figure has been the highest this year. The value of hardware sales in May increased 32.6 per cent over May last year. Other large increases were: chemists 31 per cent, furniture 29.5 per cent,

household appliances 26.1 per cent and automotive, fuel and repairs 22.1 per cent.

Department and general stores showed very little movement, up 0.8 per cent, in the value of retail sales in May over May last year. After adjustments for seasonal changes in buying patterns and different numbers of trading days sales values in May were 2.5 per cent up on April. Without any adjustments the value of sales in May over nearly all store types showed an increase compared to April. After adjustments the value of sales in May dropped compared to April in butcher, “other food,” household appliances, department and general, restaurants and takeaways, liquor and licensed accommodation and “other stores” categories.
