Role of the police for school kit

PA Wellington The need to clarify the role of the the police to the public is becoming increasingly important, said the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, in Wellington. “With so many detective and super-hero comics and books and, in particular, cop shows on television, it is not surprising that young people and adults get a distorted

view of police work,” he said, in launching a kit on “The Role of the Police.” Mr Marshall said the kit prepared for schools would help young people understand the real nature of police work. “To show the police in non-law enforcement situations puts the police role into perspective,” he said. The kit was prepared by the police with sponsorship

from the Commercial Union company, by the Education Department, and by teachers. Mr Marshall said further joint education and police projects were under way. “An abuse prevention kit will be used on trial later this year and a kit on the changing role of women in the police is being developed.”
