Close shave for Canty bowlers
The Canterbury indoor bowls team had to survive a strong challenge from South Canterbury before retaining the A. S. Paterson Trophy, 32-24, in the Kearneys Road hall on Saturday. South Canterbury trailed 11-17 at half way, but it started its come-back when it won both second-round fours. The two visiting combinations played consistently and tightly and scored close wins in both matches. The second round of singles also resulted in a 9-7 advantage to South Canterbury, which tied the over-all score at 24-all, with the four pairs games left to decide the outcome of the trophy. But the Canterbury pairs responded nobly to the challenge and won all four contests.
