Men’s hockey tournament

Canterbury B had a mixed bag of results from its three matches in a quadrangular men’s hockey tournament in Nelson at the week-end. After drawing with Nelson, 2-2, on Saturday, it lost by one goal to Wellington B yesterday morning before walloping Marlborough, 7-1. Because the Wellington team could not fly from Wellington airport on Saturday, Canterbury B had to play two matches yesterday with only 10 minutes between them.

On Saturday, Nelson handled the wet, greasy conditions better than Canterbury B which played below expectations. Nelson scored both its goals through penalty corners and Canterbury replied with a field goal by Gavin Cumberpatch rand a

penalty stroke by Glen Hayde. Andy Innes, at full-back, was very sound on defence for Canterbury. Wellington B scored the only goal of the second half to beat Canterbury, 2-1, early yesterday morning. Wellington was much quicker to the loose ball and played more positively. It employed a short, sharp passing game which Canterbury had trouble in overcoming. Canterbury was tentative on attack and gave away too much possession. It was an exciting game and even for most of the match, Wellington being awarded seven Eenalty corners and Canterury five. Phil Crisp scored Canterbury’s goal before half-time and the winning goal for Wellington came 15

minutes into the second half. A young Marlborough team was no match for Canterbury in the latter team’s second match. Canterbury attacked for 90 per cent of the match and created many scoring opportunities. It was controlled display by Canterbury, which put together its short passing, and Marlborough, which is rebuilding its team, had no answer.

For Canterbury, Brent Stanley (two), Crisp, Cumberpatch and Ross Thomson scored field goals, Michael Matsis scored from a penalty corner and Innes converted a penalty stroke.

In another match yesterday, Wellington beat Nelson, 1-0.
