Yachtsman towed into port
PA Tauranga The lone Christchurch yachtsman, Allan Ashwell, has been towed into the Port of Tauranga after the engine of his 13 metre ketch Manu Peroux seized. Mr Ashwell, aged 61, had been cruising between Auckland and Lyttelton and left Tauranga three days ago, said Senior-Sergeant Peter Wood, of the Mount Maunganui police, yesterday. His engine began to seize in rough conditions early on Thursday when the Manu Peroux was near Mayor Island. A Mayday call from the ketch about 2.45 a.m. was answered by a TaurangaBay of Plenty Harbour Board’s pilot boat. Mr Ashwell managed to start the yacht’s engine later in the morning but it failed again and he eventually was towed into port by the harbour ferry Waitere at 3.30 p.m. on Thursday. Mr Ashwell now faces a salvage bill of at least $2OOO.
