University faces hard game

In spite of a difficult start to the season, University is just 80 minutes away from clinching the Christchurch senior rugby championship cup. With a two-point lead up its sleeve over the nearest rival, Belfast and Marist, University has to beat Shirley at Lancaster Park this afternoon to be sure of taking the cup. Early season injuries plus the usual drain of squad members to representative duty made it tough for University earlier in the year but the coach, Mark

Romans, agrees things have improved since. Last week was apparently the first time the whole team had trained together for several months and Mr Romans does not see his side as title favourite. Shirley, in fifth spot, can be expected to give University a tough game. Realistically it has only a remote chance of a title share, relying on it beating University and Marist and Belfast drawing. Marist and Belfast play the curtain-raiser to the University-Shirley fixture.
