Tough hockey draw

The New Zealand hockey team will have three hard matches in as many days at a four-nation tournament in West Germany in SeptemThe New Zealand Hockey Association received the draw for the tournament this week. Its first game is against Malaysia on September 27, and following, on successive days, will be Argentina and West Germany. The tournament will form part of New Zealand’s final

preparation for the InterContinental Cup tournament to be played in Barcelona from October 12 to 20. New Zealand must finish in the top five at that tournament to qualify for the World Cup in London next year. The tournament in Germany will be played at Velbert, near Dusseldorf. Russia was originally to be one of the nations but it has since withdrawn. Japan is now the reserve nation. An invitation to play Wales later in the tour has

been declined. There was, insufficient time to fit the match between three games in England and leaving for Barcelona. The team will also spend several days in the Netherlands practising and playing club teams. The tour of New Zealand by the Japanese team early next month would be sponsored by the Post Office Savings Bank, the chairman of the N.Z.H.A., Dr Bruce Penfold, announced yesterday.
