Lopez hits 70 for lead

NZPA-Reuter ’Springfield, New Jersey Nancy Lopez, the hottest player on the L.P.G.A. tour in the last six weeks, carded a two-under-par 70 yesterday to share the lead after the first round of the fortieth U.S. Women’s Open championship. Joining Lopez in the lead were fellow-Americans,

Janet Anderson, the 1982 champion, and Kathy Baker. Seven players, including the Australian, Jan Stephenson, were one stroke back at 71. Lopez, who has three wins, two seconds and one third place finish in her last six tournaments, started fast. Baker, a second-year pro-

fessional, held her share of the lead in spite of two bogeys on the last seven holes. The defender, Hollis Stacy, of the United States, will need a reversal of fortune if she hopes to repeat. She opened with a six-over 78. A New Zealander, M. J. Smith is on 73.
