Sugar strike settled
PA Auckland Production at the Chelsea sugar refinery in Auckland will resume tomorrow. A meeting yesterday resolved a 2%-week strike by sugar workers. The 150 striking workers accepted a deal negotiated by management, the Sugar Workers’ Union and the
Auckland Trades Council, said a joint statement from the three parties. No details of the settlement were given. Since striking on June 25, the workers had been seeking payment of an extra 8c an hour, which the company previously paid to engineering trades assistants.
