The Chatham Islands are 500 miles east of Christchurch and have a population of about 750. The Resident Medical Officer Is the sole practitioner on the Islands. There is a well equipped four-bed hospital maintained by the Board. A modern fully furnished three bedroom house Is provided adjacent to the hospital. The Resident Medical Officer holds regular clinics In the surgery attached to the hospital and branch surgeries are held occasionally on nearby Pitt Island. There is a scheduled air service to the Chatham Islands from Christchurch and Wellington. Patients requiring base hospital treatment can be transferred to the mainland either by a scheduled or a special emergency flight. This Is a “Special Area” post for which the Canterbury Hospital Board acts for the Department of Health In all matters pertaining to medical services on the Chatham Islands. The position is graded as a Medical Officer of Special Scale and In addition the officer may claim maternity benefits for patients treated on the Islands. A dispensing allowance Is also paid.
