Mr Anderton speaks out

Mr Jim Anderton, president of the Labour Party in the run-up to the 1984 General Election and now member of Parliament for Sydenham, has called for a retreat from the Government’s “free market” economic policies and a return to proved Labour policies of economic management and control. In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with “The Press,” Mr Anderton says he cannot act as propagandist for policies in which he does not believe. Although he was recently rebuked by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and by the Labour executive for linking Labour’s defeat in the Timaru by-election to the “pain” which working people are suffering, he nevertheless says that he must speak out against policies which are hurting lowpaid workers in his electorate and prejudicing Labour’s chances of re-elec-tion. He urges Labour’s leaders

to think again, and to concentrate on promoting economic growth, economic stability, full employment, and reduction of the record overseas deficit through a tight imports policy. The interview appears today on the Feature Page, page 19.
