Slow times at Ashburton workouts
Times were generally slower than usual when the Ashburton trotting work-outs were held on Thursday in cool conditions. An example was the unqualified trot, in which the last 800 m took 70s. There was a reason: Dick Prendergast was the only driver to have his horse trot all the way and Karl Srhue was virtually waiting for the other horses until the straight was reached. The most impressive unqualified winner was the pacer Citizen Kane, which was late clearing a pocket and stormed home to win well, but again in slow time. The best time of the day went to Delmenny Prince, but he was only just under qualifying time in the CO pace. Results, all 2400 m, unqualified trot (three starters): Karl Srhue, R. A. Prendergast, 1; Top Decision, R. A. Cook, 2; Boyne, T. M. May, 3. Time: 3min 455. Unqualified pace, heat one (seven starters): Fantastic
