‘Bookies handling $400M’
Illegal bookmakers were, it is believed, handling between $4OO million and $5OO million a year in New Zealand, Mr Herb Dyke, a member of the New Zealand Totalisator Agency Board told the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington yesterday. Mr Dyke said the deter-
rents were not daunting enough and should be raised ‘ to a level that would place illegal bookmaking at too ?? great a risk. i It had been suggested in Victoria (Australia) that fines of up to $250,000 should be provided for in dealing with illegal bookmakers, Mr Dyke said.
