Volume XXIV of the New Zealand Stud Book, due for publication in 1987, will contain the complete stud records of some 16,000 mares, it was reported to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington yesterday. The number of mares currently entered in the Stud Book is 12,885. Volume XVIII was published in 1959 with complete records of 5358 mares. That had grown to 13,382 mares in Volume XXIV, published in 1983. The Stud Book published in 1959 listed 63 imported mares and 32 imported horses. Comparative figures in the 1983 Stud Book were 275 mares and 119 horses. Already the number of imported fillies and mares registered in the two years since publication of the last Stud Book surpassed the total registered in the four previous years. There have been 309 females and 75 horses registered since Volume XXIV.
