tma Chief Executive The Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand is a statutory body charged with the management of six divisional operations: TVNZ, RNZ, the Listener, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, BCNZ Enterprises — the marketing arm for TVNZ & RNZ, and Resource Services. Revenues derived primarily from advertising sales and licence fees presently approximate some NZ$22O million, with an operating surplus of approximately NZ$2O million. The Corporation is unique in that it operates two commercial TV stations and a radio network of some 36 commercial radio stations, the latter being in active competition with private radio and with a third private TV channel about to be authorised. The Corporation is managed by a full-time Chief Executive, Director Generals of TV and Radio, and General Managers of Resource Services, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, BCNZ Enterprises and the editor of the Listener. Its operations are overseen by a Board consisting of a part-time Chairman, and eight board members. Due to the retirement of the Chief Executive we seek a suitably qualified individual to fill this position. The successful candidate would be joining at a time of significant challenge and opportunity, given the changes taking place in the Corporation’s operating environment. RESPONSIBILITIES The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Board for the overall management of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand in accordance with the conditions of the Broadcasting Act and the Board’s interpretations of policies implied/laid down in the Act. • Provides advice to the Board on issues likely to affect policies/terms of conditions under which the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand operates. ‘ • Develops strategic plans for review/approval by the Board in accordance with agreed policy objectives. • Coordinates the day-to-day management of individual divisions with respect to: — development of group/divisional operating plans/ budgets, — setting priorities among divisions with respect to capital and operating objectives, — monitoring performance against plans, — developing appropriate personnel/financial/other operating procedures/policies/programmes/systems for successful growth of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand as the dominant communications corporation in New Zealand. QUALIFICATIONS Chief Executive candidates should be well qualified both academically and practically, with demonstrated intellectual acumen and considerable business * experience at a senior level. - ® Academic qualifications will preferably include at least a first : degree, perhaps supplemented by such post-graduate qualifications as an MBA. • Practical qualifications will derive from some contact with/ experience in media management. -•* • Intellectual capacity will be demonstrated by the ability to demonstrate a broad approach/understanding of people, cultural and public service issues.
