AUSTRALIA Peak after flurry

NZPA-AAP Sydney A late rally in Australian sharemarkets, led by a 92c jump in the Castlemaine Tooheys share price, saw the all-ordinaries index climb to a further record yesterday, brokers said. They said they were at a loss to provide reasons for the flurry of last minute activity that turned the market upward after a lacklustre day’s trading. The Castlemaine share price surged to 775 c shortly before the close when Sydney broker, Rivkin, sold two special parcels of 100,000 and 95,000 shares. The share price finished at 774. Brokers said Rivkin could be buying on behalf of the Perth businessman, Mr Alan Bond,

who was revealed as a Castlemaine buyer towards the end of last month. At the close of trading, the all-ordinaries index had gained 2.8 points to a record 909.5. Continued activity in situation stocks saw investors spend sAustlo3.s million through the day, with 63.4 million shares traded. Resource stocks were weak after an overnight rise in the value of the Australian dollar depressed offshore interest. After an 8c fall in the morning session, market leader BHP recovered to be down 2c at 656 c at the close. CSR added 8c to 312 c, CRA fell 2 to 586 and Western Mining shed 10c to 385.
