Scarry-mania
Best Bumper Book Ever. By Richard Scarry. Collins, 1984. $19.95. Parents will either love or hate this staggering collection of Scarry-mania. Children seem to love, leisurely explorations of the visual detail without a tame adult at heel. The first section looks at different jobs (fireman, sailor, miner and “Mother’s work is never done”!) There is an ABC, with detail to keep bed-tinie at bay for hours, and a “Funniest Story-book Ever,” heavy on visual slap-stick which seems to be appreciated by my pre-school audience. Its print message is lighter weight and a strange mix of “cute” and obscure vocabulary. Everything is acted out by furry animals. — Ruth Zanker.
