Superannuation schemes
Sir, — In reply to J. Williams (“The Press,” July 6), my source of information on the demographical trend in our country came from a study done at the University of Waikato a year ago. This research was reported in newspapers, and featured in an editorial in “The Press” on July 7, 1984. Mr James O’Neill, a demographer, said, “New Zealand will be unable to meet the cost of National Superannuation in its present form by the end of the century.” He also said that the population is ageing, with the number of old people as a percentage of the population rising rapidly. Most people I have spoken to recently can clearly see this happening. Many families have no children, or just one or two. I therefore stress that individuals must have their own superannuation schemes, as the Government scheme can certainly not support us all in the years ahead. — Yours, etc. MRS SALLY COUPER. July 10, 1985.
