Rugby tour
Sir,—The charge of selective morality is frequently levied against Hart and anti-tour proponents. Everyone would agree that South Africa is not the only State practising violation of human rights. One need only think of Uganda and the activities of the U.S.S.R. in Afghanistan and the United States in Central America. But one need not visit South Africa to know that it is the only country in the world that embodies in its laws discrimination against people on the grounds of colour. This is indefensible on religious and moral grounds, and insulting to two-thirds of the world’s population. I accept statements by responsible black and South Africans that the
tour will strengthen apartheid. Perhaps one day we shall view the Richards and Mintos as compassionate men who strove mightily to awaken our consciences when many placed love of rugby above compassion for millions of deprived black South Africans. Yours etc., R. M. BROADBENT. July 11, 1985.
