Myxomatosis report
Sir,—l protest at your reporting of a public meeting held in Christchurch by the Agricultural Pests Destruction Council, on the proposed introduction of myxomatosis. Readers could assume the meeting to have been a lecture by Dr Sobey, an Australian authority on myxomatosis. In fact, Dr Sobey spoke for half an hour and then he and others on the panel spent two hours answering questions and listening to the opinions of the 100 people present. These were generally well-informed, clearly-ex-pressed, and in some cases unanswerable by the panel. Under the able chairmanship of Mr Foley, chairman of the council, this highly emotive subject was debated in a reasonable, sincere way. Ninety per cent of those who spoke from the floor were opposed to the introduction of myxomatosis, mainly on humane and environmental grounds, and many were critical of the performance of the A.P.C.D., and of the phasing out of Government assistance to landowners for rabbit control. — Yours, etc., CAROL ERCOLANO. Nelson, July 10, 1985.
