Feral goats attract interest
About 1000 mated feral does changed hands at a special sale of goats at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday.
The does have been mated to either Cashmere or G 1 Angora bucks and were sold on behalf of Wilson Brothers, of The Doone, Waiau.
Mr Warren Caesar, the goat co-ordinator for Wrightson N.M.A., Ltd, of Christchurch, said the sale attracted tremendous interest. The goats were bought by people from throughout the South Island. It was hoped the sale would be held annually. About 100 mixed-age
white feral does, which have been running with Cashmere bucks imported from Australia, sold from $4OO to $550. Twenty-one black does running with the same bucks made $220 to $350, 14 grey does fetched $325 to $350, and 40 hoggets made $lBO to $2lO. Prices for 250 feral does,
which have been mated with New Zealand Cashmere bucks, ranged from $l3O to $2OO, and 600 feral does, mated to G 1 Angora bucks, sold from $l4O to $2BO. A tested Cashmere buck imported from Australia was sold for $BOOO to a Canterbury farmer.
