English ban lifted
NZPA-Reuter Zurich The International Football Federation (FIFA) said yesterday it was relaxing the worldwide ban on English soccer clubs playing abroad, imposed after 38 people died in riots at the European Cup final in Brussels on May 29. “Outside Europe, the suspension of English professional club teams is im-
mediately lifted,” FIFA said. FIFA banned all English clubs from playing abroad on June 6, eight days after the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in which Italian and Belgian spectators were crushed and trampled to death when a stadium wall collapsed during fighting between Liverpool and Juventus supporters.
