From the Wizard to body language ...

The Wizard of Christchurch heads the list of five speakers on the conference programme. The Wizard’s real name is lan Brackenbury Channell. Bom in England about 50 years ago, he spent several years at universities in Australia teaching and promoting cultural events before he came to Christchurch in 1974. He has now been given official recognition as a Liv-

ing Tourist Attraction and also has the title of ArchWizard of Canterbury. The Wizard’s opinions and beliefs are difficult to pinpoint. All politicians, capitalist and socialist alike, are given severe tongue lashings. A typical aphorism is: “I recommend that a man should have up to four wives — all working.” He can be variously described as erudite, bigoted and funny. Saturday morning’s speaker is Dr Stephen Dakin, a senior lecturer in Business Studies at the University of Canterbury. Dr Dakin lectures post-gradu-ate and under-graduate classes in industrial pyschology, organisational behaviour and personnel management, among other topics.

Dr Dakin has written many articles and is currently writing a book on business administration. He is an associate fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management, and is involved in supervisory training for middle management executives.

Mr Allan Pease is managing director of Pease Training Corporation, a management consulting and training company based in Sydney. He is widely recognised as an expert on body language.

Mr Pease will present some intriguing ideas to assist consultants in interviewing. It goes without saying that his speech will be witty and amusing. Mr Colin Mclnnes is the

director of the Canterbury Employers Association having been involved in the association for 17 years. During his career he has been an employer advocate in various industrial forums, including the Arbitration Court and Conciliation Councils. Much of his work involves counselling employers on industrial labour and social issues.

Christine Toner is an account executive with Claude and Associates in Christchurch. She has had wide experience in co-ordinating promotional campaigns for businesses of all sizes. She has special interest in direct response techniques and enjoys the challenge of helping small businesses grow.
