Lanes closed overnight
PA Auckland The outer lanes of the Auckland harbour bridge, on which welding fractures have been detected, were closed to traffic last night. The Ministry of Transport had ensured that heavy trucks and buses remained on the inner lanes. Several times yesterday outer lanes were closed while engineering inspections were made. Shortly before 4 p.m. they were reopened for peak-hour traffic. The Ministry of Transport had extra staff on the
bridge approaches to divert heavy traffic into the middle lanes, but decided last evening to close the lanes altogether until 8 a.m. today. More than 40 welding fractures have been found on the bridge’s steelwork and Ministry of Works and Development staff fear further stress to the bridge if heavy traffic continues to use the outer lanes. The Ministry’s chief civil engineer, Mr Roger Preston, of Wellington, has briefed by telephone a West German engineering specialist, Professor Karlheinz Roik.
