Trade increase with Japan
Trade with Japan represented the biggest increase in cargo moved through the Port of Lyttelton for the eight months ended May 31. Exports to and imports from Japan were up by 112,000 tonnes on the previous year. Much 'of the increase was in bulk West Coast coking coal for the Japanese steel-making industry. The Arabian trade increased, by almost 100,000 tonnes, the Australian trade by 29,000 tonnes, and the American trade by 15,000 tonnes. By commodity, the biggest increase in trade through Lyttelton was in grain (130,000 tonnes), followed by coal (86,000 tonnes), other goods (77,000 tonnes), food products (22,500 tonnes), and fertiliser (22,000 tonnes). The biggest decrease was in motor-vehicles imports, which fell by 80,000 tonnes compared with the previous year.
