Triticale grain
Sir,—An advertisement bn July 2 implies that the advertisers are the sole agents for the recentlyintroduced cereal species triticale, when in fact they are discussing only one cultivar (variety), called Lasko. That is detrimental to the interests of potential suppliers of other cultivars. But more serious for consumers is the claim “more nutritious than wheat.” The advertisement suggests that superior nutritional properties have resulted from combining those possessed by wheat and rye individually. I submit that no such superiority has been demonstrated and that this is a false claim. If the advertisers believe otherwise, perhaps they could state their evidence for the superiority of flour of triticale, cv. Lasko, over the common wheat cultivars in use in New Zealand at the same milling extraction.— Yours, etc., PETER MEREDITH. July 3, 1985.
