Pledge to ‘common people’
NZPA-AP Rome Francesco Cossiga, sworn in as Italy’s President yesterday, has pledged that his priority in office will be to help the common people. “The standard (of living) of the common people, to which went my first thoughts after being elected President of the republic, constitute the point of reference to soothe our civil conscience,” Dr Cossiga,
aged 56, said in his nationally televised message to Parliament. “The common people who work, rejoice and suffer, do not ask for Utopia ... but only the freedom to realise their own rational aspirations in their hard battle with the imperfect daily life.” He expressed hope about the future, praising “the enormous vitality” of the Italian people, and added,
“To our people go my salutations and my personal promise to be with them ... on the common road of progress.” After taking the oath of office, Dr Cossiga led a standing ovation in Parliament to honour 88-year-old Sandro Pertini, his predecessor. He said that Mr Pertini had provided a courageous symbol to those fighting for dignity and liberty.
