Butter price up 17c

PA Wellington The price of butter will rise 17c on the local market today in spite of the butter surplus which the Dairy Board is having trouble selling overseas. A 500 gm pack of standard butter will now cost a maximum $1.56, while Continen-tal-style butter is up 16c to $1.75 a pack. The price for a pack of unsalted butter will rise from $1.43 to $1.61. The assistant director of the Consumers’ Institute, Mr David Russell, has accused the board of making New Zealanders pay for its exporting problems.

“We don’t want someone like the Dairy Board offloading its troubles on to the New Zealand consumer,” Mr Russell said. “The consumer can not be expected to bear the full brunt of tougher economic times.” Mr lan Willetts, general manager of the board’s local marketing division, Buttermark, said the 12 per cent price rise should not be linked with the board’s overseas trade. The price had to rise because farmers could no longer afford to subsidise cheap butter for the local market.
