R.N.Z.A.F. begins crash inquiry

The court of inquiry into the Royal New Zealand Air Force Strikemaster crash in North Canterbury on Wednesday had an initial interview with the pilot of the aircraft during a day of inquiries centred on the Wigram R.N.Z.A.F. base yesterday. Pilot Officer Peter Lindsay parachuted to safety from his aircraft before it exploded on a hillside near the Inland Kaikoura Road, 35km from Waiau.

The three members of the court of inquiry, headed by Wing Commander Peter Faulkner, of Wellington, spent all yesterday at Wigram. The other two members are an engineering officer and a pilot officer. They are expected to leave Christchurch early this morning for the crash site, where they will examine the wreckage and speak to witnesses. They will probably be there all day today and may spend

the night in the area before returning to Wigram. An R.N.Z.A.F. spokesman said that the court hoped to finish its inquiries at Wigram early next week and would then move to the Ohakea base for further investigations. The findings of the court of inquiry are likely to be made public, although the report itself is not. It may be several weeks before anything is heard from the court.
