Minto calls charges a ‘jack-up’
PA Auckland Shouts of “jack-up” and “Justice in this country is a farce” rang round the District Court in Auckland yesterday as the Hart leader, John Bernard Minto, aged 32, was led from the dock. Minto was charged with assaulting Constable Andre Walker and with intentionally obstructing the constable. Minto pleaded not guilty and was remanded on $3OO bail to September 18. Before entering his plea, Minto told Judge Mac Lean that he did not want to see a duty solicitor but wanted some advice. The Judge said he was not in a position to give him any and Minto replied, “The point I want to make is these charges are a
jack-up”. The Judge said Minto could only plead guilty or not guilty. Minto said, “What about in repect of these charges being a jackup?” As he stood down, Minto said twice, "Ces Blazey should be in the dock, not myself.” As he left, supporters in the courtroom called out “jack-up.” The Judge ordered them to leave. Howard Edward Dalzell, aged 25, a student of Mount Eden, also pleaded not guilty to charges of resisting a constable and threatening a person in the Eden Park car-park yesterday. The Judge remanded him on $4OO bail to September 14.
