Irrigation still possible, says Mr Colman
PA Wellington Opportunities for irrigation projects would remain if water rights for the Luggate power project were granted, said the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman. He was commenting on the recommendation of the Otago Catchment Board’s water committee that Crown water rights for the planned Luggate dam on the Clutha River be granted. The recommendation has to be considered by the board, which will meet on July 15. “The watei 4 rights sought at this time apply only to the power project which requires a longer construction period than any irriga-
tion scheme,” Mr Colman said. “These rights do not preclude any irrigation scheme in any way and in fact enhance the possibilities by providing a greater head of water. “There is no need to apply for the irrigation water rights at the same time as the power station water rights and this would only delay the power scheme,” he said. The Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, had agreed to reserve enough water for any irrigation needs in the -area. Mr Colman said investigations into possible irrigation schemes were proceeding. <
