Moderate rise in building permits issued in Chch

In comparison with the dramatic increase in building permits issued nationally, Christchurch has experienced only a moderate rise. A general downturn is evident in the number of permits issued in the Christchurch City since the end of 1984, a downturn interrupted briefly in February. March and April remained low, but May saw a positive growth in permits issued. A total of 278 building permits was issued in May, in Christchurch, comparedt with 231 in April.

The executive director of the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association, Miss Valerie Harris, said that with the postponment of G.S.T. until October next year many people did not feel so pressed to get building projects under way. Miss Harris said she believed, nevertheless, that many people were still looking to build by early next year. Soon after that, the demand for building permits would probably level out.
