Regional basketball qualifying series

Eight secondary schoolboy and eight schoolgirl teams will contest the regional qualifying basketball tournament over the three days in Christchurch. Two teams of both boys and girls will qualify to represent the region at the secondary schools’ national championships, the boys in Auckland, and the girls in Nelson, on August 27-30. Cowles and Pioneer stadiums will be used today and tomorrow and finals will will be played at Shirley Boys’ High School on Sunday. Timaru Boys’ High School and Shirley Boys' High School are the top seeds in their respective boys’ sections, although Burnside High School is keen to qualify this season. Temuka and Twizel are other

boys teams from outside Christchurch attempting to qualify. Ashburton College and Rangui Ruru Girls’ School are both top contenders in the girls sections, although Mairehau and Timaru are expected to provide a strong challenge. The vital semi-final crossovers for the boys will be held at Pioneer Stadium tomorrow afternoon, while the girls semifinals will be held at C.B.H.S. Entries are: Boys: Section one.—Timaru, Burnside, Hillmorton and Christchurch. Section two.— Shirley, Temuka, Cashmere and Twizel. Girls: Section one.—Ashburton, Mairehau, Hagley and Christchurch. Section two.— Rangi Ruru, Timaru, Burnside and Cashmere.
