Solid work by Lord Venture at Trentham

PA Wellington The South Island visitor, Lord Venture, completed his preparation for the $50,000 Steel and Tube Wellington Steeplechase with a solid workout at Trentham yesterday morning. Gallops were held on the outside of the trial grass which was soft but according to some riders the conditions were quite holding. As a result there were no spectacular times. Lord Venture hit out strongly over a circuit of the track being timed from the 800 m in 1:0.5, the concluding 600 m in 435. Lord Venture is a mem-

ber of Brian Anderton and Graeme Offen’s stable at Wingatui but is at present in the care of a stable employee, Kevin Jones. Jones said that while Lord Venture has had only four starts as a steeplechaser, the horse is an accomplished hurdler and should not be unsuited by the figure-eight Trentham steeplechase course. Lord Venture has shown promise as a steeplechaser with his four starts netting two wins and a second. Lord Venture will be ridden tomorrow by his regular jockey, Neil Ridley. Although there were a handful of South Islanders present there was little fast work. In the Glen, from the Riccarton stable of Garth Jackson, was not extended to record 56.8 s for 800 m, the final 600 m in 39.55. She is in the $15,000 Whyte Handicap. Do So, a candidate for the Stewards’ Handicap, worked at a three-quarter pace over 800 m. Bart Road, from Cyril and Diane Pfefferle’s stable, took 58.4 s for 800 m, the last 600 m in 40.45. Bart Road is a BattleWaggon four-year-old and is a close relation to the former top-class galloper, Panzer Chief. Samasaan, another with Jackson, was also given light work, as were Coharken, Ashley Court, Sahib, Cedar Princess and Vrinsk. Joanda, a two-year-old by Pep with the Pfefferles, worked over 800 m, being timed from the 600 m in 41s.
